OPHTHALMOLOGISTS - WHAT WE DO

Ophthalmologists are medical doctors and surgeons who complete one of the most extensive and specialized training pathways in healthcare. Their education includes four years of medical school, a year of postgraduate medical training, and a minimum of three years of hospital-based ophthalmology residency, with many completing additional fellowship training in subspecialties such as retina, cornea, glaucoma, or pediatric ophthalmology. Ophthalmologists complete nearly 2,000 hours of mentored surgery.

This training emphasizes the diagnosis and medical management of complex eye disease, as well as the performance of delicate surgical procedures that directly impact patient safety and vision outcomes. The depth and rigor of ophthalmologist training is essential to protecting patients and ensuring that surgical eye care is delivered by appropriately trained physicians.

  • Ophthalmologists examine your eyes and prescribe glasses or contacts.
  • Ophthalmologists perform cataract surgery and intraocular lens implantation.
  • Ophthalmologists treat and manage diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and glaucoma.
  • Ophthalmologists treat amblyopia, blurred vision, strabismus, and retinal detachments.
  • Ophthalmologists treat ocular trauma, orbital fractures, and tumors of the orbit and ocular adnexa.
  • Ophthalmologists perform surgeries including refractive surgeries: LASIK, PRK, corneal rings, etc.
